If you are playing on PC, you may need to find the location of the Elden Ring save file. Players are reporting that the recent Elden Ring PC patch has corrupted their saves, causing them to lose hours of progress.
Sam praised the game in his Elden Ring review, so it’s a shame the PC version was plagued with issues. The threat of losing your progress is enough to deter us from investing too much time in a game.
Until Elden Ring publisher Bandai Namco Entertainment and developer FromSoftware patch the game, it’s a good idea to save your save files on PC and separate them from the main installation folder. That’s good advice, but where do you find your Elden Ring save game and how do you save a save file on Steam? We are here to help you.
How to back up your Elden Ring saves
You will find your Elden Ring save file in your user directory. Right-click the folder icon in your quick access bar and click “File Explorer”. Then select “This PC” from the menu on the left of the window and click on the director until you reach this location: C:Users[username]AppDataRoamingEldenRing. Once here you should see a file with a bunch of random numbers. This number is your 64-bit Steam ID, in case you were wondering.
Click inside this folder and you should see a file or files that end in .sl2. This is your save file.
If you can’t see it or can’t access this folder, you may need to reveal hidden folders. To do this, in your file browser, press view, then search for “show”, then click on hidden items or simply check a checkbox in the toolbar labeled “hidden items”.
Once you have access to the file, copy and paste it somewhere else for safekeeping – we keep a folder of backups on our desktop. This ensures that you will always have a clean backup in case something gets corrupted.
You will want to stay on top of this process though, as your save will not be saved with your save file. Make sure that after every two hours or at least when you’re done playing for the day, you save your save file to avoid any frustration you may encounter.
That’s all you need to know. Losing game progress can be downright frustrating and kill your momentum with a dead game in its tracks. Taking steps to avoid this is always the right decision.
